Systems for ski lifts

UNICARD offers a special system SkiPass to serve ski lift facilities. SkiPass ski lift supporting system has been developed for many years and it is widely acknowledged by customers in view of its reliability and operation comfort. The basic function of the SkiPass system is to support sale and to limit access to ski lifts. SkiPass is intended both for small ski lifts and for large sports complexes with many ski lifts. With the system installed on several ski lifts belonging to different business entities (owners), it is possible to use a common card pool. For the ski lift owners, it means reduction in system implementation costs; for the users, greater attractiveness of the area.

The system runs on single ride paper tickets with a bar code and multi-ride tickets in form of electronic proximity cards. Individual system elements were designed taking into account adverse atmospheric conditions. The system comprises first of all readers enclosed in metal heated boxes, turnstiles and a box office serving also as a system managing centre (a PC with software, a till reader and possibly a fiscal printer). One of the oldest advantages of the system is it can be integrated with many ski lifts operating on common electronic ski passes.

UNICARD ski systems operate more than 80 ski lift facilities in Poland.

ADVANTAGES OF SKIPASS IMPLEMENTATION

For the investor:

Increasing the efficiency of the facility operation with the possibility to make reports and statistical statements such as:

  • Number of people currently using the facility,
  • Facility load in a set period of time,
  • Load forecasting,
  • Daily sales,
  • Financial statements (including VAT reports).

Rise in profits with accelerated and improved customer service resulting in the possibility of increasing the customer number.

Staff duties reduction – makes possible to reduce workforce.

Chance to dynamically form and alter tariffs, which makes possible service prices optimization with a view to profit maximization.

Possibility to serve customers of other facilities situated close to the centre, such as hotel, restaurant, sports equipment hire shop, car parks.

High degree of safety and reliability of the system operation.

Possibility to integrate ESNO with other systems:

  • Customer loyalty system (regular customer card),
  • Access control,
  • Work time registration,
  • Personnel & Salaries,
  • Finances & Accounting.

For the customer:

Faster and improved service, ie. shorter waiting period for the ride and longer recreation period.

Simple and safe ticket (ID) using, tickets having the form of:

  • Plastic card,
  • Watch,
  • Pendant.

Possibility to use one ticket (ID) to pay for a range of services.

Possibility to get back money for unused points.

Possibility to book services.

Readers and turnstiles

The basic element of the system is an „entry gate” consisting of a turnstile and a card reader mounted at the turnstile. A single entry, consisting of the above mentioned elements is able to allow passing up to 500 people per hour. The UNITICKET 7 readers are used to read tickets (smart cards) and to control the turnstile. Readout is made when the card comes close into the proximity of the reader’s reading field. After having checked the number of points contained on the card (point cards) or validity date (for the cards with a limited period of use), the reader releases the turnstile lock letting one person enter. A determined amount of points is subtracted from the card and the fact of entry is recorded. In the case of cards with the limited period of use, solely the fact of entry is registered.

The UNITICKET 7 readers are independent devices which do not require continuous cooperation with the cash desk computers. The readers are equipped with a memory buffer enabling to register up to 6,000 entries.

Tickets

MULTIPLE TICKETS – in the system, electronic contactless cards based on MIFARE® technology are used as multiple tickets. These cards, in view of their construction, may be used under harsh conditions. They are not sensitive to low and high temperatures, dust and moisture. Moreover, cards of this type ensure high durability and safety of information stored; and due to the protections applied, it is not possible to duplicate or forge them or to falsify data recorded on them. Contactless cards may have one side or two side printing based on offset, screen printing or thermoprinting technology.

Taking into account their type, smart cards can be divided into:

Point cards: in cards of this type, the amount of points recorded on the card is determined by the customer when purchasing,

Cards with the limited period of use: such cards have validity date and hour recorded, and when they expire, the cards are no longer valid. Validity term is set by the owner of the ski lift,

Group or family cards: these are cards enabling several people to pass with one card. The number of people is declared at the cash desk when purchasing (a variety of a card with the limited period of use).

SINGLE-RIDE TICKETS – tickets made of thin plastic, with a printed barcode containing encoded information on the ticket validity date or the amount of points. Plastic used to manufacture these tickets is water- and snow-resistant. There is a possibility to use paper tickets. The significant advantage of the single-ride tickets is avoiding necessity to ask for a deposit for the card. Single-ride tickets are mostly used during the summer season in the ski centres where there is a chair lift or a cabin ropeway, and with tourist traffic all year round. Single-ride tickets and contactless cards are handled by the single reader – UNITICKET 7BC.

Cash desk

Cash desk is an element which provides the whole system management. The cash desk consists of a PC computer set with the SkiWin software installed, a cash desk reader connected, and possibly a fiscal printer. A printer enabling printing reports and invoices may be a supplementary element.

Cash desk tasks include:

* selling electronic cards (requiring a deposit) * accepting electronic card returns (giving back deposits and, if need be, equivalent of unused points) * operating the fiscal printer * managing ski lift readers * verifying and archiving data * producing reports.

SkiWin computer software enables preparing the following reports:

* history of the card with a set number, chronologically for a set date range (sale, returns, entries) * history of the entries on a set gate, chronologically for a set date range  * collective report on entries and realized points for each gate and the whole system for a chosen day or day range * collective report on cards sold and returned and authorities at a given cash desk * cashier report (cards and cash initial and final status, change in cash amount) * fiscal reports (in the case of fiscal system).

System division

OffLine system – in solutions of this type, each UNITICKET 7 reader is an independent device which, after reading the card, subtracts points from it and controls the turnstile.

These readers are not connected with computers thus eliminating the necessity to build the cable network. This system may be based SOLELY on the recordable electronic contactless technology.

OnLine system – this system allows for current tracking of all tickets and passages in the system. The system installation is, however, more difficult – a cable installation is required to connect readers with the cash desk. In solution of this type, it is possible to use SOLELY single-ride tickets with a barcode. We recommend the OnLine system to small ski centres (up to 3 ski lifts), where laying the cable does not require high labour inputs, and the cable is not exposed to frequent mechanical damage.

In practice, it is a simple system, fulfilling basic requirements to control access to the ski lifts and collecting fares.

SemiOnLine system – this solution combines advantages of both prior mentioned solutions. This system requires a cable installation to connect readers with the cash desk. Like the OnLine system, it also enables current tracking of all tickets and passages in the system.

Key advantages of this system are:

  • In the case of network fault and loss of connection between readers and the cash desk, all readers go into the OffLine mode, thus making the system continue to work. When the failure has been removed, the system automatically goes into the OnLine mode and the readers’ memory is read through the network to complete the database in the host computer.
  • Single-ride tickets with a barcode and multi-ride tickets in the form of recordable electronic contactless cards can be used SIMULTANEOUSLY in the system.
  • Possibility to automatically alter the tariff in all the readers from the level of the computer.
  • Possible complaints may be investigated immediately on the ground of the hard copy listing all passages – without the need for prior readouts making.
